Alps Alpine Co., Ltd. (Tokyo: 6770; President & CEO: Toshihiro Kuriyama) and FreeBit Co., Ltd. (headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Nobuaki Tanaka) have used blockchain-related technology pursued under the vision of a “Trusted Internet” to jointly develop “The Log,” a log data storage technology tied to blockchains that counters the risk of data tampering.

Both Alps Alpine and FreeBit have started using The Log to store log data for internal systems and services, as well as log data for external clouds, in order to be able to deliver safer, more secure services.
The Log is an off-chain log storage platform enabling a guaranteed high level of security at minimal cost. Log data that cannot be stored entirely on public blockchains due to the time required to move the data, cost or confidentiality issues (e.g. system log data, system access log data, log data containing personal information) is stored in a decentralized file system, while only the keys required to view the data are tied to blockchains. Keys required to encrypt data or write to blockchains are strictly managed using a FIPS 140-2 Level 3 hardware security module (HSM).

Alps Alpine has started using the jointly developed The Log for storing system logs of its own services and anticipates application within the automotive industry for storing data with a high level of security.
The company will examine ways to use the system as IT infrastructure technology contributing to the automotive industry. For example, the system could be used to manage such data as drive history and accident history, allowing more transparent valuations of used cars on the basis that blockchain technology characteristically makes data tampering impossible. And as connected cars spread, leading to more of various kinds of vehicle-related information, the system could be used to store the data in a way it cannot be tampered with.
Alps Alpine will continue contributing to the automotive industry by working with FreeBit to fuse automotive infotainment equipment development and manufacturing expertise with IT software and infrastructure technology to strengthen service development and operation capability.
